NEW HORIZONS TO BENEFIT FROM  MANCHESTER ST PATRICKS DAY PARADE
Cash and Food Collection Vans Posted Along Route

MANCHESTER, NH – March 19, 2010

Manchester St. Patrick’s Parade Committee will partner with New Horizons for New Hampshire Soup Kitchen, Food Pantry and Shelters for this year’s St. Patrick’s Parade. Those attending the parade are asked to bring canned food goods, non-perishable food items or monetary donations to the parade.

On March 28, 2010, during the parade, collection vans will be posted along the route at these locations:  the corner of Elm Street and Brook Street at Pappy’s Pizza, Elm Street and Bridge Street and at the review stand in front of Veteran’s Park (across from Pleasant St.). The parade will begin at 12 noon at the intersection of Elm and Salmon Street and progress south on Elm to Auburn St..

“As famine and hunger are embedded in Irish history, it is very appropriate that the parade committee and New Horizons have formed what hopes to be a long term partnership to meet the needs of those in our community”, said Dan O’Neil, Parade Committee President.

“The parade is a great opportunity to raise awareness of hunger in Manchester and hopefully the thousands that attend the parade will help by participating in the drive”, continued O’Neil, “ Having the vans along the route will make it easy to collect and transport the donations back to New Horizons.”

Over 2,000 marchers will be featured this year; pipe and drum bands, high school bands, drum and bugle corps, sports teams, organizations, military and veteran’s units, Shriner’s mini cars, floats, dancers and entertainment units of all kinds.

Mike Tessier, New Horizons executive director said, “We are thrilled and honored to partner with the Parade Committee. This will help us to continue our mission at New Horizons to provide food and shelter to those less fortunate within our community.”

New Horizons for New Hampshire is a soup kitchen, food pantry and provides emergency shelter at 199 Manchester Street and Angie’s (for Women) at 434 Union Street.  Call (603) 668-1877 or visit www.NewHorizonsforNH.org for more information.

St. Patrick’s Parade Committee of Manchester, Inc.

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE:

The Manchester St. Patrick’s Parade Committee announced the 2010 Thomas J. King Award recipient is Nancy Gati, an educator, humanitarian, fund raiser and advocate for the needy. This award, established by past Parade Committee president and retired Chief of Police Tom King, pays tribute to individuals who perform outstanding service to the Greater Manchester community. She will have a place of honor in the March 28, 2010, St. Patrick’s Parade.

Mrs. Gati has been teaching at Hillside Middle School for 30 years, where she consistently tries to empower her students to work at improving their community. She facilitates student participation in the Annual Walk Against Hunger, which effort raised $8,950 last year. She was honored by New Horizons for her students’ financial support of the Soup Kitchen’s 2009 Thanksgiving Breakfast. With Nancy’s advice and counsel, students later collected 4,400 pounds of food for the WJYY Holiday Food Bank, thereby being recognized as second in New Hampshire for most canned goods donated. Each Thanksgiving and Christmas, she organizes and encourages Hillside students and faculty to donate turkeys and canned items for those in need, after which she and her family actually deliver parcels to area families.

Hillside School principal Stephen Donohue said, “Mrs. Gati does a great job in not only raising our students’ awareness of community needs, but teaches them to actively address those needs.” Parade Committee president Dan O’Neil added, “Cognizant of Ireland’s wrenching experience with hunger and starvation in past centuries, Helping Hands Feeding The Hungry is this year’s parade theme. Consistent with that, we’re very pleased to recognize Nancy Gati as a most fitting TJK Award selection.” In furtherance of this theme, the Parade Committee will team with New Horizons to collect donated food during the 2010 parade.

Nancy Gati lives in Manchester, is married to Jack Gati, coach of the Salem High School Blue Devil Football Team, and they have three children – Meredith, Elizabeth and Peter.
